Jordan's Story....

Jordan’s Footsteps was established to honor the life and memory of Jordan Abramowitz, who passed away on January 23, 2009, at age 16, after a courageous battle with cancer. At age 6, Jordan was diagnosed with a life threatening brain tumor. It became immediately apparent (even then at 6 years old), the type of person Jordan was and would grow up to be. He put his best foot forward, with a smile on his face and handled himself with maturity far beyond his years. After a year and a half of treatment which included surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, Jordan was in remission.

Throughout the next nine years, Jordan went on with his life, sharing with others his compassion for, and commitment to his family, friends and community. He became involved in various causes to raise money for cancer awareness, including organizing his own Relay for Life team for four consecutive years. In 2008, Jordan was honored as the top fundraiser, raising over $10,000 (both individually and as a team) for the Plainview-Old Bethpage Relay for Life.

At the age of 15, Jordan was elected to be a student ambassador from the United States and to travel to Australia and New Zealand. While sitting in the airport waiting to board the airplane for a trip of a lifetime, Jordan had a seizure. As it turned out, Jordan had a different type of brain tumor than that which he had at age 6 – a glioblastoma multiforme – a brain tumor for which there is no known cure. As before, Jordan faced this dreadful disease with courage like no other. After 18 months of continuous treatment, which included several surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy, Jordan passed away.

Jordan lived a courageous life full of compassion for others and a commitment to his family, community and the causes in which he believed. As an organization, we are dedicated to following in Jordan’s Footsteps, marching forward with that same courage, compassion and commitment that Jordan exhibited throughout his life.
